Reverse Engineering

Redesign and Refinement of Existing Products

Let's start with the Results

Reverse engineering is the redesign conducted from an existing object and requires solid experience and specialist skills in electronics, electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, energy, materials and of course industrial design. For this reason we entrust the reverse engineering operations to Ergo Design which has a solid know-how and over 25 years of experience.
WE PROPOSE A CASE STUDY
If you want an example of reverse engineering realized by our team, you can consult the salinometer probe realized on behalf of Soteco International Srl, redesigned by Ergo Design and mass produced by ItalMeccatronica.
WHAT HAVE WE IMPROVED?
Compared to the sample probe supplied by the customer, we have made the following improvements:

Durability: the conscious choice of stronger materials has improved the robustness;
Ergonomics: the shape of the cap ensures a safer and easier grip;
Reliability: the intervention on materials and electronics has increased the accuracy;
Versatility: electronics of the probe allows further functions to be implemented in future;
Cost: the simplicity of production and assembly has enabled cost containment.

HOW DID WE GET THESE RESULTS?
The following is a brief description of the three-step method by which we deal with this type of project.

1. ANALYZE

The first fundamental aspect is the careful analysis of what already exists. To be able to redesign effectively, it’s necessary to decode the basic elements that make up the existing project, to know how they work and what they are used for the new project. Every detail must be clear and there must be no secret: the designer who has not fully understood every detail risks re-proposing unnecessary or even counterproductive elements.

2. REORGANIZE

The next step is the reorganization of the components. Each project presents unique and particular challenges, so it’s necessary to reorganize the analyzed elements in order to precisely meet the new needs. We remove what is not needed or is obsolete and add what is necessary to update the product and raise its standards.

3. Improve

Reverse engineering is always an improvement activity for us. Analyzing an existing product gives the possibility and the mental space to notice defects and think alternatives. Design improvements can be made on various aspects and we often manage to act on the following levels simultaneously:
Prestational: Increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the product. We improve existing performance or add new features that make the product better for the purposes of the project.
Productive: We can do things smarter, saving work and material. Often we can reduce the size and complexity of the product.
Economical: We save money as a result of production improvements and by eliminating what is not necessary for the specific purposes of the project.
